Ghusl Maliki - How to Perform Ghusl According to Maliki Madhab
Looking for ghusl Maliki method? This is the complete guide to performing Maliki ghusl with all 5 obligatory acts.
The Maliki madhab, founded by Imam Malik ibn Anas (711-795 CE), is followed by approximately 15-20% of Muslims worldwide, predominantly in North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya), West Africa, parts of Egypt, Sudan, and some Gulf states.
The Maliki school has the most detailed requirements for ghusl: 5 obligatory acts.
This guide is part of our Complete Ghusl Learning Center.
The 5 Fard Acts in Maliki Ghusl
1. Niyyah (Intention)
Required: You must intend to purify yourself from major impurity.
2. Washing the Entire Body (Taʿmīm)
Required: Water must reach every part of your body.
3. Dalk (الدَّلْك) - Rubbing
Required: You must actively rub your body with your hands during washing.
Not enough: Just letting water flow over you.
Why unique: Only Maliki madhab makes rubbing obligatory.
4. Muwalat (المُوَالَاة) - Continuity
Required: You must wash body parts in succession without long breaks.
Invalid: Washing head, taking a 15-minute break, then washing rest of body.
What’s “long”? Generally, if the first part dries before you wash the next part, the break was too long.
5. Khilal (الخِلَال) - Combing Hair
Required: You must run your fingers through your hair to ensure water penetrates.
How: Part hair with fingers, massage scalp, ensure water reaches roots.
Why unique: Only Maliki madhab makes this obligatory.
Maliki Ghusl is Most Thorough
The Maliki requirements ensure:
- Complete water coverage (washing + rubbing)
- Proper continuity (not interrupted process)
- Hair penetration (combing ensures roots reached)
Following Maliki method guarantees thorough purification.

Key Maliki Rulings
Mouth/nose rinsing: Sunnah only (not fard for ghusl)
Rubbing required: Must actively rub body, not just let water flow
No long breaks: Maintain continuity throughout ghusl
Women’s braids: Undo for menstruation; keep for janabah if water reaches roots
Maximum menstruation: No fixed maximum (depends on woman’s custom)
Common Questions
“What if I don’t rub my body?” Your ghusl is invalid in Maliki madhab. Rubbing (dalk) is fard.
“How long can I pause between parts?” Don’t pause long enough for the first part to completely dry. Keep washing continuously.
“Do I need to rub with soap/sponge?” No, rubbing with your hand is sufficient. Soap is not required.
