Mistake #1: Keeping Nail Polish On
Why It’s Wrong:
Regular nail polish creates a waterproof barrier. Water cannot penetrate it, leaving part of your body (nails) unwashed.
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID
Solution:
- Remove all nail polish before ghusl
- Use regular nail polish remover
- Check all nails (hands and feet) are completely clean
What about “breathable” nail polish?
- Some scholars allow wudu-friendly/breathable polish
- For menstruation/postpartum ghusl, safer to remove all polish
- Check with your madhab’s scholars
Mistake #2: Leaving Dry Spots on Your Body
Why It’s Wrong:
Even a tiny dry spot the size of a hair invalidates ghusl.
Commonly Missed Spots:
- Behind the ears
- Inside the belly button (navel)
- Between toes and fingers
- Armpits
- Behind the knees
- Under tight rings/bracelets
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID
Solution:
- Systematically wash every body part
- Check commonly missed areas deliberately
- Run fingers between toes, in navel, behind ears
- Remove tight jewelry before starting
Mistake #3: Not Removing Tight Jewelry
Why It’s Wrong:
Tight rings, bracelets, anklets prevent water from reaching the skin underneath.
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID if water couldn’t reach under them
Solution:
- Remove all tight jewelry before ghusl
- Or loosen enough that water flows underneath
- Check skin under jewelry is wet
Loose jewelry: If jewelry is loose enough for water to flow freely under it, you may keep it on.
Mistake #4: Not Ensuring Water Reaches Hair Roots
Why It’s Wrong:
Just wetting hair surface doesn’t count. Water must reach the scalp and hair roots.
Common Among:
- Women with thick, long hair
- People with dense, curly hair
- Anyone with braids (for menstruation ghusl)
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID
Solution:
- Pour water multiple times over head
- Massage your scalp to ensure penetration
- Part thick hair in sections
- Women: Undo tight braids for menstruation ghusl

Mistake #5: Not Rinsing Mouth and Nose (Hanafi/Hanbali)
Why It’s Wrong:
In Hanafi and Hanbali madhabs, rinsing mouth and nose is obligatory (fard) for ghusl.
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID if you follow Hanafi or Hanbali madhab
Solution:
- Rinse mouth thoroughly - swish water around
- Rinse nose - sniff water in and blow out
- Do this during Step 5 (as part of wudu)
Note: In Shafi’i and Maliki madhabs, this is sunnah (recommended) but not fard for ghusl.

Mistake #6: No Intention (Shafi’i/Maliki)
Why It’s Wrong:
In Shafi’i and Maliki madhabs, intention (niyyah) is obligatory for ghusl.
Taking a shower without intending ghusl = just a regular shower, not valid ghusl.
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID if you follow Shafi’i or Maliki madhab
Solution:
- Make intention in your heart before starting
- Example: “I intend to perform ghusl to purify myself from janabah/menstruation”
- Don’t need to say it aloud
Note: In Hanafi and Hanbali madhabs, intention is sunnah, not fard.
Mistake #7: Using Waterproof Makeup/Products
Why It’s Wrong:
Waterproof mascara, foundation, eyeliner create a barrier preventing water from reaching skin.
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID
Solution:
- Remove all waterproof cosmetics before ghusl
- Use makeup remover
- Check face, eyes, eyebrows are clean
- Wash face thoroughly during ghusl
Mistake #8: Women Not Undoing Braids (Menstruation Ghusl)
Why It’s Wrong:
For ghusl after menstruation/postpartum, women must undo tight braids to ensure water reaches hair roots.
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID if braids prevented water from reaching roots
Solution:
- For menstruation/postpartum ghusl: Undo tight braids
- For janabah (intimacy) ghusl: Can keep braids if water reaches roots
Evidence: The Prophet (ﷺ) told Asma to undo her hair for menstruation ghusl but told Umm Salamah she doesn’t need to for janabah ghusl.

Mistake #9: Long Breaks Between Washing Parts (Maliki)
Why It’s Wrong:
In Maliki madhab, continuity (muwalat) is obligatory. Long breaks between washing different body parts invalidate ghusl.
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID if you follow Maliki madhab
Solution:
- Wash continuously without long pauses
- Don’t wash head, take 15-minute break, then wash body
- Complete ghusl in one continuous session
What’s “too long”? If the first part dries completely before you wash the next part.

Mistake #10: Not Rubbing Body (Maliki)
Why It’s Wrong:
In Maliki madhab, rubbing (dalk) is obligatory. Just letting water flow over you isn’t enough.
Consequence:
GHUSL INVALID if you follow Maliki madhab
Solution:
- Actively rub your body with your hands as you wash
- Don’t just stand under shower letting water flow
- Rub each body part as you wash it
Other Common Mistakes (Don’t Invalidate But Reduce Reward)
1. Wasting Water
Using excessive water is against the Sunnah. The Prophet (ﷺ) used only 3-3.75 liters.
2. Rushing Through Ghusl
Too fast means you might miss spots. Take 5-10 minutes.
3. Taking Too Long (Waswas)
Spending 30+ minutes due to obsessive doubts. This is waswas - ignore the doubts.
4. Not Following the Sunnah Order
Not washing right side first, then left. Doesn’t invalidate, but misses the reward.
5. Not Doing Wudu as Part of Ghusl
You can still pray after ghusl, but following sunnah brings more reward.

What If You Made a Mistake?

If You Realize Later:
After drying off/leaving bathroom: Safer to repeat entire ghusl to ensure validity.
If You Just Doubt (Not Certain):
You’re not sure if you made mistake: Your ghusl is valid. Don’t repeat due to doubt. This is waswas.
