Ghusl According to Shafi’i Madhab: The Simplest Approach

The Shafi’i madhab, founded by Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi’i (767-820 CE), is followed by approximately 15-20% of Muslims worldwide, particularly in East Africa, Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia), parts of the Middle East (Yemen, parts of Syria), and among Kurdish Muslims.

When it comes to ghusl, the Shafi’i school has the simplest requirements: only 2 obligatory acts.

This guide is part of our Complete Ghusl Learning Center.

The 2 Fard Acts in Shafi’i Ghusl

1. Niyyah (Intention)

What: You must intend in your heart to purify yourself from major impurity.

Example intention: “I intend to perform ghusl to purify myself from janabah/menstruation.”

When: Make intention before or at the start of ghusl.

Note: Unlike Hanafi madhab, intention IS required in Shafi’i fiqh.

2. Washing the Entire Body (تَعْمِيمُ البَدَنِ بِالْمَاءِ)

What: Water must reach and flow over every single part of your body from head to toe.

Includes: Hair, scalp, ears, face, neck, arms, torso, legs, feet, between toes, private parts.

Critical: Even a tiny dry spot invalidates ghusl.

That’s It - Just 2 Acts!

The Shafi’i madhab makes ghusl remarkably simple. If you:

  1. Make intention, AND
  2. Ensure water reaches your entire body

Your ghusl is valid.

Rinsing mouth and nose? Sunnah, not required. Specific order? Sunnah, not required. Washing right side first? Sunnah, not required.

While not required for validity, these actions follow the Prophet’s (ﷺ) method:

  1. Washing hands before starting
  2. Cleaning private parts
  3. Performing complete wudu
  4. Pouring water over head 3x
  5. Washing right side first, then left
  6. Rinsing mouth and nose (though not fard for ghusl)
  7. Saying Bismillah
  8. Rubbing the body with hands

Following the complete sunnah method earns greater reward.

Complete Shafi’i Ghusl (Sunnah Method)

Step 1: Make intention in your heart (FARD)

Step 2: Say “Bismillah”

Step 3: Wash hands 3x

Step 4: Clean private parts

Step 5: Perform complete wudu:

  • Rinse mouth 3x
  • Rinse nose 3x
  • Wash face 3x
  • Wash arms 3x (to elbows)
  • Wipe head 1x
  • Wipe ears 1x
  • (Delay feet until end)

Step 6: Pour water over head 3x (ensure roots reached) (FARD - as part of washing entire body)

Step 7: Wash right side thoroughly (FARD)

Step 8: Wash left side thoroughly (FARD)

Step 9: Wash feet 3x each

Result: Valid ghusl + wudu, ready to pray.

Does Shafi’i Ghusl Include Wudu?

Strict Shafi’i ruling: Ghusl does NOT automatically include wudu. You should perform wudu separately or ensure all wudu acts are done during ghusl.

Why? Shafi’i madhab requires:

  • Intention for wudu specifically
  • Specific order of wudu parts
  • Washing each part a specific number of times

Practical solution: Do complete wudu as Step 5 of your ghusl. This ensures both ghusl and wudu are valid.

Key Shafi’i Rulings

Women with braids: Undo tight braids for menstruation ghusl; keep for janabah if water reaches roots.

Maximum menstruation: 15 days (beyond is istihadah)

Maximum postpartum bleeding: 60 days

Ghusl validity: Only intention + complete body washing required

Common Questions

“Can I do ghusl in shower without rinsing mouth/nose?” Yes, your ghusl is valid in Shafi’i madhab. But you should do wudu separately before prayer.

“If I forget intention?” Your ghusl is invalid in Shafi’i madhab. You must repeat with intention.

“Does order matter?” No. You can wash left before right, or all at once. As long as entire body is washed with intention, ghusl is valid.
