What Breaks Ghusl? Understanding Major vs Minor Impurity

One of the most common questions Muslims ask is: “What breaks ghusl?” or “Do I need to repeat ghusl after [sleeping/eating/using toilet/etc.]?”

The answer is simple: Very few things break ghusl.

Understanding the difference between major impurity (hadath akbar - breaks ghusl) and minor impurity (hadath asghar - breaks wudu only) is essential.

What BREAKS Ghusl (Requires New Ghusl)

Only 4 major impurities break ghusl:

1. Sexual Intercourse

When penetration occurs, both husband and wife enter a state of major impurity (janabah) requiring ghusl.

Even if:

  • No ejaculation
  • Condom was used
  • It was brief

Evidence: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When a man sits between the four parts of a woman and penetration occurs, ghusl becomes obligatory.” (Sahih Bukhari)

2. Ejaculation

When ejaculation occurs (semen is emitted with desire/pleasure):

  • During intercourse
  • During foreplay
  • From wet dream (nocturnal emission)
  • Otherwise

For women: If discharge occurs with orgasm/pleasure, ghusl required (according to most scholars)

Note: Just an arousing dream with no discharge doesn’t require ghusl.

3. Menstruation Begins (For Women)

When menstrual bleeding starts, a woman is in major impurity.

Note: The START of menstruation doesn’t require ghusl (you can’t do ghusl while menstruating). Ghusl is required when menstruation ENDS.

4. Postpartum Bleeding Begins (For Women)

When postpartum bleeding (nifas) starts after childbirth, same ruling as menstruation.

Ghusl required: When the bleeding ENDS (usually within 40 days).

That’s It - Only These 4 Things!

Everything else breaks wudu (minor ablution) only, NOT ghusl.

What Does NOT Break Ghusl (Only Breaks Wudu)

These things break wudu but do NOT break ghusl:

1. Using the Toilet

  • Urination
  • Defecation

Result: Need fresh wudu before next prayer, NOT new ghusl

2. Passing Gas

Result: Need fresh wudu, NOT new ghusl

3. Sleep

  • Deep sleep
  • Light nap
  • Overnight sleep

Result: Need fresh wudu before next prayer, NOT new ghusl

4. Loss of Consciousness

  • Fainting
  • Anesthesia
  • Intoxication

Result: Need wudu, NOT ghusl

5. Touching Private Parts

Shafi’i and Hanbali madhabs: Touching your own private parts breaks wudu

Hanafi and Maliki madhabs: Doesn’t break wudu unless something exits

All madhabs: Does NOT break ghusl

6. Bleeding from Wound

Hanafi madhab: If blood flows from wound, breaks wudu

Other madhabs: Most say doesn’t break wudu unless excessive

All madhabs: Does NOT break ghusl

7. Vomiting

Hanafi madhab: If mouthful, breaks wudu

Other madhabs: Doesn’t break wudu

All madhabs: Does NOT break ghusl

8. Eating Camel Meat

Hanbali madhab only: Breaks wudu

Understanding the Principle

Major Impurity (Hadath Akbar) - Requires GHUSL:

Definition: State caused by sexual activity, ejaculation, or menstrual/postpartum bleeding

What you can’t do:

  • ❌ Pray
  • ❌ Touch Quran
  • ❌ Recite Quran (majority opinion)
  • ❌ Enter mosque
  • ❌ Perform tawaf
  • ❌ Fast (if janabah continues past Fajr in Ramadan)

What you CAN do:

  • ✅ Make dhikr
  • ✅ Make dua
  • ✅ Study Islamic knowledge (not Quran)
  • ✅ Eat, drink, sleep

Minor Impurity (Hadath Asghar) - Requires WUDU:

Definition: State caused by toilet, gas, sleep, etc.

What you can’t do:

  • ❌ Pray
  • ❌ Touch Quran (majority opinion)
  • ❌ Perform tawaf

What you CAN do:

  • ✅ Recite Quran (without touching mushaf)
  • ✅ Enter mosque (some scholars say it’s better to have wudu)
  • ✅ Everything else

Practical Examples

Example 1: Ghusl in the Morning

Morning: You perform ghusl after intimacy

Throughout the day: You:

  • Use toilet 3 times
  • Pass gas twice
  • Take a nap

Before each prayer: You need fresh wudu

Do you need new ghusl? NO - one ghusl suffices for the whole day (or longer) until next major impurity

Example 2: Friday Ghusl

Friday morning: You do ghusl for Jummah (recommended)

After ghusl: You:

  • Use toilet
  • Passgas
  • Eat lunch

Before Jummah prayer: You need fresh wudu

Do you need new ghusl? NO - your Friday ghusl is still valid

Example 3: After Menstruation

Woman performs ghusl when period ends

Next day: She:

  • Sleeps
  • Uses toilet
  • Cooks
  • Goes to work

Before each prayer: She needs fresh wudu

Does she need new ghusl? NO - her ghusl from yesterday is still valid

Does Ghusl Include Wudu?

Important to Know:

If you perform ghusl properly (including rinsing mouth and nose where required by your madhab), ghusl includes wudu.

This means:

  • After ghusl, you can pray immediately without separate wudu
  • But if you later break wudu (toilet, gas, sleep), you need fresh wudu, NOT new ghusl

Common Questions

“I did ghusl yesterday - is it still valid today?”

Yes! Ghusl doesn’t expire. You remain pure until a major impurity occurs.

“I slept after ghusl - do I need new ghusl?”

No, just fresh wudu before prayer.

“Does ghusl last for one prayer only?”

No, ghusl lasts until the next major impurity (intercourse, ejaculation, etc.).

“I’m not sure if my wudu broke or ghusl broke - what do I do?”

If you’re not sure which broke, just do wudu. Ghusl rarely breaks. Only repeat ghusl if you’re certain a major impurity occurred.
