What Are the Most Important Ramadan Duas?

The most important Ramadan duas are the Iftar dua for breaking the fast and the Laylat al-Qadr dua for seeking forgiveness. Both are authentically narrated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Iftar Dua (Breaking Fast)

ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Dhahaba al-zama’u wa abtalat al-‘urooqu wa thabat al-ajru in sha Allah “The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills”

Laylat al-Qadr Dua

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni “O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me”


What Ramadan Duas Should I Know?

Every Muslim should know the Suhoor intention dua, the Iftar breaking-fast dua, the Laylat al-Qadr forgiveness dua, and general supplications for guidance and acceptance. These duas are recited throughout Ramadan.

What Is the Dua for Beginning the Fast (Suhoor)?

The Suhoor dua is “Wa bi-sawmi ghadin nawaytu min shahri Ramadan,” meaning “I intend to fast tomorrow in this month of Ramadan.” It is said before Fajr when making the intention to fast.

Arabic:

وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ

Transliteration:

Wa bi-sawmi ghadin nawaytu min shahri Ramadan

Translation:

“I intend to fast tomorrow in this month of Ramadan”

When to say: Before Fajr, when making intention to fast


What Is the Dua for Breaking the Fast (Iftar)?

The most common Iftar dua is “Dhahaba al-zama’u wa abtalat al-‘urooqu wa thabat al-ajru in sha Allah,” meaning “The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills.”

Dua 1 (Most Common)

Arabic:

ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Transliteration:

Dua 2

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ

Transliteration:

Allahumma laka sumtu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu

Translation:

“O Allah, I fasted for You and I break my fast with Your provision”


What Is the Dua for Laylat al-Qadr?

The dua for Laylat al-Qadr is “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni,” meaning “O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.” The Prophet taught this dua specifically for the Night of Power.

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Transliteration:

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni

Translation:

What Is the Dua When Seeing the New Moon?

The dua when seeing the Ramadan moon is “Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-yumni wal-iman,” asking Allah to bring the new month with blessings, faith, safety, and Islam. It is recited upon sighting the crescent.

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْيُمْنِ وَالْإِيمَانِ وَالسَّلَامَةِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللَّهُ

Transliteration:

Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-yumni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam, rabbi wa rabbuka Allah

Translation:

“O Allah, let this moon appear on us with blessings and faith, safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah”


What General Duas Are Important During Ramadan?

Key general duas for Ramadan include supplications for forgiveness (Istighfar), guidance (Huda), and acceptance of worship. The Sayyid al-Istighfar (Master of Forgiveness) is especially recommended during this blessed month.

Dua for Forgiveness

Arabic:

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

Transliteration:

Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna la-nakunanna minal-khasireen

Translation:

“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers” (Quran 7:23)


Dua for Guidance

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

Transliteration:

Allahumma inni as’aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-‘afafa wal-ghina

Translation:

“O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency”

Dua for Acceptance

Arabic:

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Transliteration:

Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka anta al-Sami’u al-‘Alim

Translation:

“Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing” (Quran 2:127)


Sayyid al-Istighfar (Master of Forgiveness)

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Transliteration:

Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’dika mastata’tu, a’udhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu, abu’u laka bi ni’matika ‘alayya, wa abu’u bi dhanbi, faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfiru al-dhunuba illa anta

Translation:

“O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I hold to Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for none forgives sins but You”

Dua Before Eating

Arabic:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَةِ اللَّهِ

Transliteration:

Bismillahi wa barakatillah

Translation:

“In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah”


Dua After Eating

Arabic:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Transliteration:

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at’amana wa saqana wa ja’alana Muslimeen

Translation:

“All praise is due to Allah Who has fed us and given us drink and made us Muslims”


Dua When Invited for Iftar

Arabic:

أَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ وَأَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الْأَبْرَارُ وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ

Transliteration:

Aftara ‘indakum al-sa’imun, wa akala ta’amakum al-abrar, wa sallat ‘alaykum al-mala’ika

Translation:

“May the fasting people break their fast in your home, may the pious eat your food, and may the angels send blessings upon you”

When Are the Best Times to Make Dua in Ramadan?

The best times for dua in Ramadan are while fasting, just before breaking the fast at Iftar, during the last third of the night before Fajr, between the Adhan and Iqamah, and throughout the last ten nights.

  1. During fasting - The dua of a fasting person is accepted
  2. At Iftar time - Just before breaking fast
  3. Last third of the night - Before Fajr
  4. Between Adhan and Iqamah
  5. During prostration (Sujood)
  6. On Fridays - Especially last hour before Maghrib
  7. Last 10 nights - Especially odd nights

What Tips Help With Making Dua?

Face the Qibla, raise your hands, begin by praising Allah and sending blessings on the Prophet, be sincere and humble, have conviction that Allah will answer, be persistent in repeating your duas, and end with Ameen.
